Description of the course

The digitization of control and protection systems in electrical substations is already a reality, marked by the IEC 61850 standard. All leading manufacturers in the industry include this standard as the core technology of their substation equipment. The old wired systems, with concentrated communication networks and combining multiple proprietary standards, are now transformed into TCP/IP communication networks with interoperable IEC 61850 protocols, with configuration systems based on data models and information exchange services.

The paradigm shift is complete, requiring new knowledge unheard of in the industry, such as communication networks and protocols, abstract data modeling and the handling of configurations based on structured and common files. The demand for specific knowledge will be growing in the sector, since the implementation of IEC 61850 in the substations of all Spanish electric utilities will require these new skills in engineers, installers and professionals in the sector.

CIRCE is one of the IEC 61850 development and consulting partners in the projects of several of the main operators of the electrical distribution network in Spain. Its background is made available in this course to learn all the definitions of the standard and its main forms of application in systems and equipment. This training has already accumulated more than 10 online editions and 5 on-site editions and more than 200 professionals of the sector have passed through it.
