Zaragoza becomes one of the hundred cities chosen by the European Commission to achieve zero emissions by 2030 with the support of CIRCE

The action plan, developed in collaboration with the CIRCE technology centre, includes projects on sustainable and intelligent mobility, renaturalisation and circular economy, energy and efficiency

Zaragoza has been selected by the European Commission as one of the ‘100 Climate-Neutral Cities,’ a recognition that establishes it as a European leader in sustainable mobility projects, energy efficiency, nature-based solutions, and circular economy.

By joining this select list, the city gains access to new European funding and financing opportunities to become, with Europe’s support, a hub for experimentation and innovation in energy and sustainability. The action plan submitted as part of the application, developed with the support of the CIRCE technology center, includes projects based on four strategic pillars: sustainable and smart mobility, nature-based solutions, circular economy, energy, and efficiency.

The plan was very well received by the public and regional entities, garnering nearly 120 letters of support from companies, financial institutions, universities, foundations, associations, professional colleges, and consumer groups, among others.

Among the specific projects that will be initiated are the electrification of urban transport, the 'Bosque de los Zaragozanos' (Zaragozans' Forest), the re-naturalization of the Huerva River channel, deepening waste recycling efforts, the renovation of 3,000 homes to reduce their thermal consumption, and the promotion of renewable energy communities with the development of solar neighborhoods and industrial areas like the one being promoted in the Actur district.

For CIRCE, it is an honor to have been able to collaborate with all the areas of the Zaragoza City Council involved in preparing this application. Its selection marks the starting point for the development of new urban projects in energy and sustainability,” explains David Rodríguez, head of Public Programs at the center.

With this new challenge on the horizon, Zaragoza will become a focal point for sustainability and innovation investment, serving as a beacon to guide other European cities on the path to achieving emissions neutrality in the future.
