Description and objectives
WaysTUP! aims to demonstrate the establishment of new value chains for the utilization of urban biowaste to produce higher value products (i.e. bio-based products, including food and feed ingredients), through a multi-stakeholder approach in line with the circular economy.
The project will demonstrate a portfolio of new “urban biowaste to bio-based products” processes from different feedstocks, namely fish and meat waste, used coffee grounds, biowaste separated from household sources, used cooking oils, cellulosic waste derived from municipal wastewater and waste treatment plants, and sewage sludge.
The pilot demonstration will take place in several European cities, including Valencia (Spain), London (UK), Alicante (Spain), Prague (Czech Republic), Athens (Greece), L'Alcúdia (Spain), Terni (Italy) and Crete (Greece).
The processes will lead to the production of food and feed additives, flavors, insect proteins, coffee oil, bioethanol, biosolvents, polyhydroxyalkanoates, ethyl lactate, long-chain dicarboxylic acid, bioplastics and biochar.
Final product characterization and safety assessment will be carried out.
A life cycle assessment of value chains will be conducted to evaluate their environmental impact.
WaysTUP! will develop and implement a behavioral change approach with citizens and local communities by improving the current perception of citizens and local communities on municipal biowaste as a local resource; improving the active participation of citizens in the separate collection of municipal biowaste; and improving customer acceptance of products derived from municipal biowaste.
New profitable business models will be developed to prepare the market entry of the demonstrated technological solutions, as well as the final products resulting from them.
Finally, the project will provide guidance to city managers on the adoption of new organizational models that support the valorization of municipal biowaste, as well as evidence-based policy recommendations at EU level for decision-makers.
Value proposition
Main objective: the overall objective of WaysTUP! is to demonstrate the establishment of new value chains for the utilization of urban biowaste for the production of higher value products (i.e. bio-based products, including food and feed ingredients), through a multi-stakeholder approach in line with the circular economy.
Project outcomes:
- Expand the biomass feedstock portfolio of the bioeconomy.
- Demonstrate a diverse range of technologies for the utilization of municipal biowaste, resulting in new end products and value chains
- To encourage behavioral change among citizens in terms of their participation in the collection and utilization of urban biowaste and the acceptance of products derived from urban biowaste
- To develop new business and marketing concepts along the entire MSW value chain
- To support the successful incorporation of integrated systems innovation approaches aimed at the valorization of municipal biowaste into current and future local, national and EU policies.
- Identify opportunities and barriers for the utilization of urban biowaste sources.
