Description and objectives

Water losses have a significant environmental impact in terms of depletion of natural resources (water, energy, ecosystems), but also directly affect people and the economy, for example through contamination of water transport systems, higher water costs, service interruptions or conflicts between users due to water scarcity.

WADI's proposal addresses the Horizon2020 challenge of building an efficient and climate resilient society.

It will develop an innovative concept for coupling and optimizing remote sensing devices to detect water leakage in transmission systems outside urban areas, while taking into account the integration of a general, credible, reliable and scalable concept for the valuation of ecosystem services in the water sector.

Value proposition

The main objective of WADI is to contribute to the reduction of water losses in transportation systems for supply, irrigation and power generation, and simultaneously, to reduce the associated energy consumption in the process, as well as to help the companies involved in offering services with better economic performance.

In particular, the project aims to develop an innovative airborne leak detection system to provide companies in the sector with adequate information about leaks in the transport infrastructure in non-urban environments, and to optimize their performance in this field.

This will be achieved through a novel remote optical sensor (using multispectral and infrared cameras, which are already available on the market), and its application on two complementary aerial platforms (both manned and unmanned), in a real environment represented by two pilots.

Specifically in Spain (Palma de Mallorca), for the case of supply pipelines, and Portugal (Alqueva), for the case of multipurpose facilities intended for irrigation, supply and hydroelectric.CIRCE will lead:

  • The analysis of the results and social benefits.
  • The economic and environmental characterization “from cradle to grave” of the new leak detection method “WADI”, carrying out life cycle and cost analysis of the whole system.
  • Analysis of aquatic ecosystems affected by WADI innovations.
