Description and objectives

The project will create a concise knowledge base for the sustainable sourcing and logistics of biomass for non-food purposes (quantities, costs, technology options for 2020 and beyond etc.) contributing to the development of technological and market strategies that support the development of a resource efficient Bio-economy for Europe.

This will include both industrial processes for the production of biomass products/goods, as well as for energy conversion, in both large and small scale.

For the achievement of these objectives S2BIOM will compare and make use of the most relevant and recent information on biomass supply obtained from existing projects in Europe.

In this way, it will present the state of the art of current and future lignocellulosic biomass costs and supplies, as well as current and future biomass conversion technologies, classifying and characterizing the main components of its logistic chain, such as storage, pretreatment and transport technologies.

In order to ensure results of the highest standard, the project will rely on a series of carefully selected case studies to carry out the validation of the results, and will be developed in close collaboration with key stakeholders in the markets, industry and policy of this sector.

The research work to accomplish these tasks will be organized into 3 separate but strongly interconnected themes:

  • Data collection and estimation of biomass potentials.
  • Development of strategies and roadmaps
  • Validation of the solutions found in the previous themes.

Value proposition

The main objective of the project is to support the development of a sustainable logistics chain for non-food biomass at local, regional and pan-European levels, through the development of strategies and roadmaps that will be fed by a “computerized and user-friendly” tool with harmonized and updated databases for the 27 EU member countries, the Balkans, Turkey and Ukraine.

The ultimate goal of S2BIOM is to contribute to the objectives of the European strategy set for 2020, through the creation of a bio-economy, the deployment of renewable energies and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

CIRCE will collect information from the Aragon region in Spain, thus contributing to the elaboration of a capacity mapping, needs analysis, trends and future scopes, etc., in order to develop the vision, strategies, implementation plans and roadmap on R&D for the non-food biomass supply chain at pan-European level.

CIRCE will ensure that the theoretical concepts are correctly transposed to the Spanish cases, addressing the main regional stakeholders by identifying and mapping their requirements.

With their collaboration, CIRCE will test and validate the tool developed in the project, and select and monitor the case studies.
