Description and objectives

INSULAE aims to drive innovative solutions for the decarbonization of EU islands. It will develop and demonstrate interventions on three Lighthouse Islands (in Croatia, Denmark and Portugal) linked to seven replicable use cases. The results will validate an Investment Planning Tool, which will be demonstrated on four Tracker Islands (in Spain, Germany, Netherlands Antilles and Greece) for the development of four associated Action Plans.

The chosen islands are complementary in several aspects. INSULAE contributes to the EU Clean Energy Initiative for Islands by providing an Investment Planning Tool capable of creating action plans for the decarbonization of island energy systems. Interventions will demonstrate the ability of the use cases to develop renewable energy based systems 40-70% cheaper than diesel generation, achieving an average reduction in fossil fuel consumption of 11% after widespread implementation on INSULAE islands.

Value proposition

The main objectives include the creation of an investment planning tool, the demonstration of interventions on three lighthouse islands, large-scale replication, the involvement of islanders in the transition to a low-carbon economy, the protection of island ecosystems and the creation of a critical mass of professionals ready to replicate INSULAE use cases. It also seeks to share knowledge in the BRIDGE Initiative and contribute to the homogenization of fragmented island regulation.
