Description and objectives
eLITHE aims to support the decarbonization of the ceramics industry by demonstrating sustainable and cost-effective ways to electrify high-temperature thermal processes (i.e., melting, calcination and firing). This is crucial for the EU to achieve its 2050 climate neutrality target, as energy-intensive industries (EIIs) are responsible for a large share of greenhouse gas emissions.
Value proposition
eLITHE demonstrates three different electric furnaces: (1) a frit melter based on electrodes and induction, (2) a microwave-powered alumina calciner, and (3) a hybrid brick firing tunnel kiln for combined use of electricity and hydrogen combustion at three pilot sites.
In addition, eLITHE develops new material compositions compatible with electrical heating, investigates circular materials for use in high-temperature energy storage applications, and creates digital tools to improve process energy management and enable safe and sustainable operation.
