Description and objectives

The project aims to mark a key milestone towards the future industrialization of bio-based fiber and coatings production in Europe, envisaging the mobilization of relevant investments and encouraging the adoption of collaborative models.

All this to demonstrate effective ways to develop new cases of bio-based economy, interconnecting it with the circular economy to link environmental sustainability and economic profitability.

The project covers the entire value chain: raw material production, conversion into innovative bio-based building blocks through chemical and biotechnological processes, formulation of innovative bio-based polymers (polyesters and polyamides), final product development, end-of-life product management and processing.

Following a circular economy approach, the sustainability of value chains will be enhanced by demonstrating improved end-of-life of bio-based eco-engineered solutions developed through the application of monomer regeneration, recycling (for polyamide-based fibers and coatings) and composting / anaerobic digestion processes (for polyester-based coatings).

The EFFECTIVE project aims to demonstrate the first economically viable route for the production of bio-based polyamides and polyesters from renewable raw materials for the production of fibers and coatings with improved, market-competitive properties and enhanced sustainability.

These materials will be applied in eco-engineered consumer products for different markets, such as construction, automotive, primary and secondary packaging and textiles, and with the potential for application in many other markets (fisheries, engineering plastics, agriculture, hygiene and personal care).

Value proposition

CIRCE will take part in the improvement of Eco-design and recycling processes, and will lead the valorization of by-products following a circular economy approach, in order to obtain biogas for energy purposes.

In addition, CIRCE will carry out resource and energy efficiency assessment to optimize the processes, as well as social acceptance studies with a view to the future market integration of bio-based products.

Together with the other partners CIRCE will also assess environmental, economic and social sustainability through the application of LCA, CCA and S-LCA (Social Life Cycle Assessment).

In addition, the center will contribute to the definition of strategies and measures necessary for the standardization of bio-based products.

Using our own methodology, we identify the environmental and socioeconomic risks of the materials that make up the products in order to issue eco-design recommendations, improve their recyclability and minimize manufacturing costs.
