Description and objectives

With the aim of increasing farmers' incomes and aligning with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), while addressing the objectives of the Green Deal and the Bioeconomy Strategy, BRILIAN will support the adoption of sustainable cooperative business models in rural areas. These business models will enhance rural development, biodiversity preservation and climate neutrality.

To this end, BRILIAN will implement a multi-stakeholder approach for the validation of a set of Actions for Bio-Innovation (ABI) at both macro and micro level. The Bio-Innovation Actions are ABI 1. Forge robust rural bio-communities. ABI 2. Achieving circularity and sustainability. ABI 3. Integration of short supply chains and ABI 4. Production of value-added bio-products. BRILIAN's innovations will therefore enable primary producers to diversify their income while reducing risks. These ABIs will be particularised for 3 pilots in Italy, Spain and Denmark.

Within these pilots, a set of business models for the validation of 10 value chains will be improved and tested. 6 in Italy, 2 in Spain and 2 in Denmark. The BRILIAN pilots will make use of existing rural infrastructures, but implement adaptations to current core processes and contractual arrangements between actors.

To reinforce this, business model design approaches will be supported by modules addressing logistical, organisational and sustainability factors weighted in the BRILIAN optimisation toolkit, a complex model-based toolkit that will provide support for the design and optimisation of bio-based value chains, putting producers at the centre first.

As a result, BRILIAN will establish long-term strategies for the adoption of cooperative business models in the EU, facilitated by the generation of 11 key exploitable outputs during the project, including technical, socio-economic, policy and regulatory and academic ones. The implementation of such an ambitious project requires a consortium of 13 partners with 11 BIC members.

Value proposition

  • Learning and Monitoring Framework Development and Implementation: Develop and implement a learning and monitoring framework. We generate relevant content to feed into the framework and facilitate the evaluation of sustainability and circularity, ensuring a holistic and results-oriented approach.
  • Development of the Logistics Module and BRILIAN Toolkit: CIRCE develops the logistics module and the BRILIAN optimisation toolkit. We are committed to the successful implementation and adoption in the three project pilots, offering practical and efficient solutions to improve logistics and optimise processes.
  • Expertise in Sustainability and Circularity Assessment: We have proven experience in sustainability and circularity assessment, ensuring that the approaches implemented in the project are aligned with standards and best practices.
  • Effective Project Management: We provide effective and proactive project management, ensuring the successful implementation of each phase of the project and facilitating effective collaboration between the different partners and teams.
  • Commitment to Innovation and Continuous Improvement: We are committed to constant innovation and continuous improvement, seeking opportunities to optimise processes, drive efficiency and maximise the positive impact of the project on sustainability and circularity.
