Description and objectives

The energy transition to a decarbonized, competitive and secure energy system is a challenge for energy and resource intensive industries (REIIs) in the EU, as they must adapt their current consumption and production patterns to an electricity supply with an increasing number of fluctuating renewable sources.

Although some solutions are already available and ready for deployment, the lack of best practices and experience in managing both highly flexible energy technologies and fluctuating energy supply is limiting their introduction into the market.

The BAMBOO project will address these needs through the development of a demand management concept on residual steam streams that are often discarded by the REII sector.

This solution will provide industries with the information they currently need to adapt their processes to new and more advanced demand response schemes.

Value proposition

BAMBOO aims to develop new technologies that address energy and resource efficiency challenges in four intensive industries: steel, petrochemical, mining and paper.

The technologies to be developed aim at waste heat recovery, electrical flexibility and valorization of waste steam streams, and will be integrated into a multi-sectoral energy and feedstock flexibility management tool.

The solutions will be validated in the four demonstrators of these sectors, hoping to achieve at the end of the project an improvement in competitiveness thanks to:

  • A reduction in energy costs of 15-20%.
  • An improvement in process efficiency of between 17-20%.
  • And a reduction in CO2 emissions of 5-23%.
