Description and objectives
AGROinLOG is based on the demonstration of Integrated Biomass Logistics Centers (IBLC) for food and non-food products, evaluating their technical, environmental and economic feasibility.
The project is based on three agro-industries of fodder (Spain), olive oil production (Greece) and cereal processing (Sweden) that are willing to deploy new business lines in their facilities.
These lines will allow them to generate new bio-products (e.g. biomass) and intermediate bio-products (e.g. for the chemical sector), using their own waste or waste from the environment.
Taking advantage of the facilities, equipment and know-how to integrate an IBLC business into existing agro-industries can mean a reduction of around 18% compared to the cost of starting such a business from scratch.
Specifically, the first analyses carried out on the pilot agro-industries have shown that savings of 1-2 million euros could be achieved in the first ten years of operation. In some cases this figure could even exceed 10 million euros.
The main challenges lie in the ability to integrate logistics, harvesting and equipment in food and non-food applications, where the project is focused, thus ensuring the viability of the commercialization of the final bio-products. The project will also contribute to employment stability, minimizing the seasonal effects of this sector, rural development and EU bio-economy objectives.
Value proposition
AGROinLOG's main objective is to implement and demonstrate the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of Integrated Biomass Logistics Centers (IBLCs) for food and non-food products.
IBLCs will be deployed in existing agribusinesses to take advantage of unexplored synergies in terms of available equipment and personnel, diversifying regular activity and increasing the competitiveness of agribusinesses, while increasing the added value of these companies.
AGROinLOG is born with a short-term business perspective, focusing on providing full-scale IBLCs immediately.
To achieve this goal, the following specific objectives have been established:
- Demonstrate integration in food and non-food businesses in three European agribusinesses.
- Promote innovation-based multi-stakeholder collaboration to promote the adoption of business models by the agribusiness sector.
- Elicit the most viable and promising IBLC deployment options for 6 agro-industry sectors in Europe based on their status, synergies, potencies and opportunities to adopt new non-food biomass and bio-based and bio-based intermediates businesses.
- Ensure adequate exploitation and dissemination of the project to seek market application and replication in other sectors.
