CIRCE will enable leading Aragonese companies to save energy in plastic recycling

The technology center has brought together companies such as Aplast, CAAR, HMY, Pikolin, Relax, and Urbaser to apply the project's advances to their respective production processes.

CIRCE hosted the consortium of the European project polynSPIRE (led by CIRCE) in Zaragoza, which aims to save energy in plastic recycling processes. During the meeting, not only were the project’s ongoing results discussed, but the visit of the project partners to the Aragonese capital was also used to leverage these results at the regional level. In this regard, CIRCE gathered leading companies such as Urbaser, Relax, Pikolin, Aplast, and the Aragonese Automotive Cluster (CAAR), among others, in a networking event aimed at exploring the opportunities offered by new plastic recycling methods in the business community and understanding the current and future demands of companies in the region.

Reduction of up to 40% in CO2 Emissions

The work on polynSPIRE is being carried out within a project involving 21 partners and funded with €8 million by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 program.

polynSPIRE focuses on chemical and mechanical recycling to achieve up to a 34% reduction in the use of fossil resources for polyamides (synthetic fibers) and a 32% reduction for polyurethane (plastic material), leading to a decrease in CO2 emissions by between 30% and 40%.

During the event, the invited companies expressed interest in exploring collaborative solutions to position Aragón as a leader in European technology for sustainable plastic material treatment. Both the project partners and regional companies explored collaboration opportunities during the event, highlighting the potential of the polynSPIRE project in just its first 7 months.

This initiative is a pioneering experience promoted by CIRCE, which is positioning itself as a leader in European innovation management. The event's outcomes were of great interest to the consortium, the invited companies, and especially the European Commission, and it will be considered a best practice for future projects both led by CIRCE and those where the Foundation plays a key role in the exploitation of results.
